Families. I believe the legislature should never lose sight of the preeminent role families play in our society. I believe the common threads that connect all our families are stronger than those that separate and segregate us. As it relates to families, I believe in an adaptation of the older Shaker saying, "Ye lift my family and I'll lift yours, and we will all ascend together." Let's build on strengths and elevate all in our communities.
Education. I believe a strong public school system is an essential element in maintaining an active and effective democracy. The legislature should provide support for the two main groups in the educational process; the students and the teachers, as we create an educational system that grows in excellence as it continues to grow in size.
We owe students:
• Curriculum and choices that meet the needs of all students
• Emphasis on disciplines that will prepare this generation of students for the future
• An environment that is safe and conducive to learning and nurtures the whole student
We owe educators:
• Funding for the necessary resources that will help dedicated and creative teachers in their task of educating
our children
• A dedication to follow Governor Huntsman's charge to increase salaries
• An environment that values their tremendous contributions to society
Economic growth. An environment where businesses can flourish is key to a strong economy. We need to optimize innovation and invest in technology as we move forward to a successful future. All our families are beneficiaries of a durable and prosperous economy, which depends greatly on an educated and prepared work force. Sustainable support of a strong educational system is a critical part of the process of economic growth.
Environment. It's time for us as a people; families, neighborhoods, communities, and especially the legislature, to stand up for a balance of responsible industry with long range plans for protection of the environment. Clean air, pure water, and secure energy sources are all an essential part of this equation.
Health care. Affordable health care should be a right that is attainable for all citizens. We need to continue supporting benefits for Medicaid patients and citizens with disabilities. Increase access to health care as well as control costs by looking at more efficient ways of providing services.
